Strengthening Collaboration with Armenia’s NIH: A Site Visit to Yerevan

Written by Anastasia Zholud

Global Health Electives Coordinator for AUC/RUSM

Earlier this summer, during August 11–15, 2025, Dr. Bulat Ziganshin, Director of the Global Health Program, and I spent five inspiring days in Yerevan exploring opportunities to expand our Global Health Elective network.

We had the privilege of establishing a new partnership with the National Institute of Health (NIH) of Armenia. During our visit, we met with the heads of key clinical departments—psychiatry, cardiology, and neurology—and toured both the largest public and private medical centers in the country. These included Shengavit Medical Center, Erebuni Medical Center, and St. Gregory the Illuminator Medical Center. We were welcomed warmly by doctors and staff, had a chance to observe the facilities firsthand, and discussed exciting clinical rotation opportunities for our medical students and residents.

What stood out most was not just the excellent quality of the facilities and clinical expertise, but also the genuine hospitality we received throughout our stay. Armenia’s safety and welcoming spirit make it an especially attractive location for our students.

We are deeply grateful to our colleagues at NIH for their gracious reception and support, and we look forward to launching this partnership and bringing students to Armenia soon.
