ACCESS - Uganda

The Global Health partnership between the African Community Center for Social Sustainability (ACCESS) and Nuvance Health (Formerly Western Connecticut Health Network)/University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine (NH/UVMLCOM) and was founded in 2014 with the aim of establishing a mutually beneficial and sustainable relationship between NH/UVMLCOM and ACCESS in terms of sharing knowledge, culture, experience and resources in primary care and nursing fields and beyond.

About ACCESS

ACCESS is a community-based organization in Nakaseke district, Uganda, which is dedicated to working with vulnerable groups in resource limited settings through medical care, education and economic empowerment. ACCESS cares for and supports people living with HIV-AIDS (PLWAs) together with orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC). Since the beginning, ACCESS provides care for over 120 PLWAs through strategic alliances with centers providing antiretroviral drugs for the management of HIV. ACCESS receives over 12,000 patient visits per year from all over the district for management of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. The medical center has a doctor, clinical officer, nurses, and visiting health workers. A mobile team consisting of a Doctor/or Clinical Officer, Nurse, Counselor or a Health visitor, conducts routine visits to provide medical care and support to its beneficiaries.

About Nakaseke

Nakaseke is located in the Nakaseke district of the central region of Uganda. It is approximately 40 miles northwest of Kampala, the capital city. The population of Nakaseke is estimated to be 2200 people and Luganda is the spoken language of the community. Nakaseke has a 120-bed hospital, which is run by the Ministry of Health of Uganda.
